CHUCK D STARTING TO SAVE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY... AGAIN! THIS GUY JUST DON'T STOP:

Public Enemy co-founder Chuck D has announced the launch of a new company that aims to revolutionize the way the Hip-Hop community conducts business across the globe.

The rapper's new business, The Bring The Noise Eastlink Media, Management, Music Group (BTNEastlink), will offer a wide range of business and digital media services for artists under one roof.

The new firm represents a union of several interests supported by Chuck D and the Public Enemy family over the years, in an effort to meet the total needs of the company’s entertainment and technology clients.

Under the leadership of Chuck D, entertainment lawyer and digital media consultant Dan Lugo and producer Gary G-Wiz, BTNEastlink houses the SlamJamz Records label and divisions to handle artist management, marketing, consulting, video game scoring and other services.

“Basically, it’s like putting all my diversified people under one roof,” Chuck D. told AllHipHop.com. “A lot of door knocking internationally will take place. Urban has sensibilities that are definitely planetary. But the discussions have to be more intense and more elaborate.”

BTNEastlink will offer its clients what Chuck D. defined as “what Live Nation has promised Jay-Z, to a much lesser degree,” adding that he is looking to work with veteran artists, as well as up comers, to further market them across the world.

The company also seeks to push for Hip-Hop’s complete immersion into the digital age, something Chuck D and long-time partner Lugo have already done with SlamJamz Records.

The Red Eye-distributed label already coordinates digital-only releases for two thirds of its current 45-artist roster.

With the addition of the new dedicated film, licensing and merchandising branches of BTNEastlink, Chuck D hopes to not only create new opportunities for his clients, but to also revolutionize the business model under which Hip-Hop currently operates.

“Business could stand, in Hip-Hop, to be a little more organized and less cut-throat,” says Chuck D. “I’ve seen some individual achievements over the years that basically did not look back or did not pave the road for other ways to follow. That doesn’t work worldwide. Domination does not help here. The NBA has 30-some odd teams, and the NFL has 30-some odd teams that all need each other to exist. In Hip-Hop, I’ve often seen that, if this was a Thanksgiving table, everybody got food all over their face, scrambling and running out the back door with the turkey.”

THEM MOTHERFUCKIN BITCH ASS NIGGERS STOPPED NAS FROM RELEASING HIS N-WORD ALBUM:

Queensbridge, New York rapper Nas has confirmed that he has changed the title of his forthcoming controversial album from N***er.

Contrary to reports that the album will be titled Nas, the rapper told AllHipHop.com that the album will simply be untitled.

"It's important to me that this album gets to the fans," Nas told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “It's been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It's that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it."

Nas’ will release another single from the upcoming untitled release, which will be his 9th studio album.

In January, a representative for Island Def Jam denied allegations that they were planning to drop Nas unless he changed the album’s title, after reports surfaced that retailers were hesitant to stock their shelves with the album.

The rapper also had the support of a number of his peers, including Island Def Jam CEO Antonio “L.A.“ Reid, LL Cool, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, although his former nemesis told MTV News that he felt that Nas' album title was “misguided.”

“I know he's very intelligent and there a reason behind what he's doing…he's not just doing it for the sake of being provocative….of course we're going to support his art…I believe it's coming from a great place. I just think it's misguided.”

In February, Nas and his wife Kelis caused a mild controversy, when they donned clothing emblazoned with the word “n***er” on their front and backs to the Grammy Awards.

Nas’ untitled album is due in stores July 1 on Island Def Jam.

UNFORTUNATELY, DURING MY INCARCERATION, THIS CD WAS COMPILED WITHOUT MY APPROVAL. I HEARD THIS CD IN ITS ENTIRETY FOR THE FIRST TIME JUST DAYS AGO AND WAS DEVASTATED. RIDDLED WITH GRIEF OVER AN ALBUM THAT WAS SEEMINGLY SO CARELESSLY ORCHESTRATED, I SAT DOWN WITH THE PRESIDENT OF KOCH TO COME TO A DECISION ON HOW TO MAKE THE BEST OF THIS SITUATION. IN ANOTHER PHASE OF MY LIFE AND CAREER I WOULD HAVE DEALT WITH THIS SITUATION WITH LITIGATION, BUT FOR THE BENEFIT OF MY FANS AND IN THE WAKE OF THE PROFOUND SPIRITUAL CLEANSING I RECENTLY UNDERWENT IN PRISON, I MADE THE DECISION TO SETTLE OUR CREATIVE DIFFERENCES AMICABLY. May 15, 2008 | me update

Hi, my name is Mindbender! How are you feeling today? It better be nothing short of excellent :)
Okay, as I get into the habit of doing these at least once a week, I'm going to make it worth our time and energy. It's time to be SUPREMELY HONEST with myself and you:

I love my life. I love you. But I'm afraid of my life, sometimes, and I'm afraid of you.
I'm afraid of how much devoting myself to hip hop history and music will change my world.
And I'm afraid of how my relationships will change when my friends and family learn how crazy I am for hip hop culture and music, how far I want to take things, and how revolutionary some of my ideas are...
but it's a case of 'damned if you do, and damned if you don't'. I am born to do this, and I don't do anything better in my life, than serve hip hop culture and give you truth and love... but as Mos Def said: "it's kinda dangerous to be an MC/ they shot Tupac and Biggie!"

Guess I just need to get a bulletproof vest and run towards my destiny with a mic in my hand!
Okay... I'm reloaded!

Today: I'm detoxing myself (thanks, Gracie!) and starting a 7-day-long studio blackout session. I got tons of beats here, I got lots of rhymes, and I gotta get my new shit ready for July! This is going to be the best summer ever for Toronto, and I'm going to be a big part of it!

FRESH OUT THE 'LOVE IS INSANITY' DEPT.:
Okay, long story short: Remy Ma (allegedly) shot her childhood homegirl in the guts over a few thousand bucks a few months ago. She recently went to trial. A few days ago, the verdict came down. Fat Joe's least favorite female rapper got 8 years in jail for attempted murdaaa. Her (no longer) secret fiancee Papoose (formerly "next big thing in NYC" rapper) went nutzo in the courtroom when Remy was sentenced. And he allegedly tried to break her out with some sort of key (c'mon... NOBODY'S that stupid, are they?)

Well, here's Papoose's song to Remy for you to download, if you are interested: http://sharebee.com/9fab1bd5

...and say goodbye to another female MC from the rap game. They are getting way too rare in hip hop. Bring back (the righteous version of) Lauryn Hill!

FRESH OUT THE 'NEVER SAY DIE' DEPT.:

Who woulda thunk it?! Apparently, right now, while you are there doing whatever you're doing today: ROBERT KELLY IS ACTUALLY ON TRIAL FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY!
Finally! Justice may be served! (I have seen the tape. It IS him. Sorry to break it to any of you (trapped in the) closet R. Kelly fans, LOL!

Here's an update:

As the child pornography trial of R&B superstar R.Kelly approaches, attorneys for both sides recently added five new jurors.

Three jurors had already been selected; two African-Americans (one man and one woman) and a white man. Now the number has been increased to eight jurors, with five more having been selected on Tuesday (May 13). The jury now consists of five men and three women and an even split of both black and white jurors, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. This makes the selection process half complete, as 12 jurors and four alternates will ultimately be picked.

Of the recently added jurors is a 20-something white woman studying criminal justice who aspires to be a police officer.

When asked her views of the justice system, she said, "I like it and think it is a fair system when done properly." The woman professed to know nothing about the R. Kelly case, except that he is a singer who had been arrested. She said she barely knows his music, just the "very old stuff."

Another juror, an African-American man, a student, said he heard about the case on TV and radio, but could "absolutely" put that aside and judge the case on the evidence.

"I haven't seen the tape, and I haven't followed the story," he said.

A white man also selected said he had past experience as a juror, having served on two civil cases.

Another juror, a black woman in her 20s, is a teacher's assistant at St. Agatha parish, the church on the West Side of Chicago where the Rev. Daniel McCormack worked before pleading guilty last year to sexually abusing boys. The woman said she had previously discussed the Kelly case with friends, who are divided on his guilt or innocence.

The fifth juror picked Tuesday is a compliance officer with a Chicago investment firm. The man said he had looked the Kelly case up on the Internet and read a "couple of stories," and that he knew someone who had been a victim of sexual abuse. But he said neither factor would prevent him from being fair.

"I'd hold myself to a very high standard," he said.

It is speculated that the remaining jury spots could be filled by week's end as selection will continue today.

Kelly is facing 14 counts of child pornography for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with a girl as young as 13. He has pleaded not guilty and faces up to 15 years.
LOCK HIM UP! THAT MAN HAS NEEDED SOME KIND OF REHAB FOR WAY TOO LONG!

WWW.VIBE.COM PREVIEW OF THE MURDA INC. ARTICLE. LET'S SEE IF THEY STILL GOT IT:

Will The Inc. rise again? Read an exclusive excerpt from our June feature on the label that changed it all
From 1999 to 2003, the record label and clique known as MURDER INC. dominated. Launched by the vociferous, hard-partying Irv Gotti, Murder Inc. made Ja Rule a superstar and produced megahits for Fat Joe and Jennifer Lopez. But despite blows from 50 Cent, a falling out with Ashanti, and the trial of Gotti’s life, Murder Inc. is born anew. Today, Gotti and his family are reality TV stars, Ja is back in the studio, and The Inc. is aching to rise again. Thomas Golianopoulos puts the pieces together.

Money was raining from the sky - literally. In billing, I did like $120 million two years straight. Anything I wanted, I was getting. I didn’t hear ‘no’ much back then.

IRV GOTTI TOOK HIS BEATING LIKE A MAN. It was June 2000, and he’d just finished playing what would become Ja Rule’s sophomore album, Rule 3:36, for his Def Jam bosses, Lyor Cohen (the label chairman at the time) and Kevin Liles. Cohen and Liles were experienced king- makers, helping launch artists like Run DMC, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and Jay-Z.

But they weren’t feeling 3:36, a turn to lighter fare after Ja’s hard-edged debut. The insults started flying Gotti’s way. “It’s soft. It’s wack,” said Liles, who did most of the talking. “This isn’t even hip hop.” And, worst of all (to the suits), “You wasted our money.”

Gotti was shocked—the young A&R star wasn’t used to having his ears questioned, even back when he was choosing beats for his fi rst artist, Mic Geronimo.

By the turn of the century, he had been instrumental in bringing Jay-Z and DMX to Def Jam (both in ’97), and he’d delivered Ja’s platinum 1999 debut, Venni Vetti Vecci. Not to mention, according to Irv, “All the bitches in L.A. was loving [3:36].” At the end of the meeting in Lyor’s swank office, Liles ordered Gotti to make an entirely different record.

What did he change? Not a thing. Def Jam eventually provided Irv with 10,000 pieces of vinyl for the lead single, “Between Me & You”— a very modest roll-out—and Gotti started calling his radio connections. “I whored Ja out basically,” Gotti says now. “I was like, ‘Please, if you like it, just play it.’ And, boy, did they play it.”

Rule 3:36, a reference to a Bible passage from the Book of John, eventually sold more than three million copies and initiated one of the most successful runs in hip hop history. All told, between 1999 and 2005, Murder Inc. released eight platinum albums through Def Jam and conquered the Billboard charts. In 2002 alone, Gotti produced nine Hot 100 Top 20 hits. He did it by keenly merging R&B with street rap. It seems obvious now, but Gotti godfathered an entire subgenre: gangsta pop.

Irv and his crew also pissed off a lot of people, from rival rappers to executives. But most notably, he caught the attention of the federal government, which put him on trial for money laundering. Now, through a series of interviews (see THE PLAYERS below), VIBE chronicles the highs and lows of the controversial label that made its own distinct sound, made friends, made enemies, but most importantly, made history.

IN THE MID-1990S, IRVING DOMINGO LORENZO was a young cat from Hollis, Queens, known as Magoo for his signature Mr. Magoo squint. But in the music world, he was a producer known as DJ Irv who’d just cut ties with Queens MC Mic Geronimo. Irv says, “He wasn’t fucking with me the way I needed him to.” Mic says, “I didn’t sign to his production company [Top Dog Productions], and I think he was counting on that.”

Irv eventually linked up with fellow Hollis native Ja Rule, a rapper he’d followed since Ja was part of the failed TVT Records group Cash Money Click. Gotti always envisioned running a rap empire, and, thanks to his success with Jay-Z (see sidebar), he scored a serious sit- down with Def Jam President Lyor Cohen for an A&R position. He aced it, and soon thereafter, Gotti’s ascension from brash, cocky A&R to brash, cocky CEO was underway.

Russell Simmons: This guy comes into my office saying, “The only way niggas is going to dance again is like this.” And he started bouncing. Because that was the [musical] vibe DMX and Ja Rule had.

Mike Kyser: Irv came in with a chip on his shoulder. He was ready to change the whole system in a week. Irv was like, “We need some new blood.” He brought this guy named DMX to the building.

Julie Greenwald: Gotti plays me [DMX’s] “Get at Me Dog” and is like, “It’s going to sell five million.” I’m like, “Irv, you’re out of your mind.” [DMX’s 1998 debut, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, went on to sell just short of four million copies.]

Chris Gotti: They were like, “Irv, [DMX] barks. He’s a fucking dog. Who’s going to want to buy that?” They used to laugh at Irv.

Irv Gotti: In 1998, [then Sony vice president] Dave McPherson, was like, “I want to give you a label.” That’s when Lyor was forced to give me a label deal, which he didn’t even give me. [Universal CEO] Doug Morris gave it to me. [Despite numerous requests, Cohen declined to be interviewed for this story.]

Simmons: Irv graduated to a label...quickly. It didn’t take long. How long did it take for the white guy who signed Britney Spears to get a label?

Remy Ma's wedding called off when hubby-to-be Papoose smuggles in key
Remy Ma
Papoose

Remy Ma's jailhouse nuptials were abruptly called off Monday when her rapper groom, Papoose, showed up with a most curious wedding present: a handcuff key.

"A wedding was scheduled today and a visitor to that wedding service was found to be in possession of jail contraband so the wedding was canceled," a correction official told the Daily News.

"The key that was found today easily opened handcuffs that we and other law enforcement officials use," the official said.

Now the 29-year-old Brooklyn-born Papoose - real name Shamele Mackie - won't be able to see his fiancée until November.

"The visitor was sanctioned by not being able to visit Rikers Island again for six months," the official said. "He was asked to leave."

So was Papoose trying to break out his rap queen, whose real name is Remy Smith, from the joint?

Neither his or her camp were saying - but Remy has every reason to be eager to get cut loose.

The 26-year-old Terror Squad rap princess faces up to 25 years at today's sentencing for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the stomach last July outside a Meatpacking District club.

Papoose was not charged after he voluntarily surrendered the key to authorities.

He was quickly ushered out of the jail and never got to enter the prison island's Rose M. Singer chapel in which the two were set to say their "I do's."

T.I. VS. SHAWTY LO BEEF. WHAT UP WITH THIS? I BARELY CARE:

Despite house arrest and facing prison time, rapper T.I.'s involvement in the rap game is as strong as ever. The Atlanta native, who was convicted earlier this year on weapons charges, is still making TV appearances, recording albums, and is even involved in a rap beef with rapper Shawty Lo.

The self proclaimed King of the South recently called Baltimore radio station 92Q Jamz and commented on the feud, comparing Lo to a dog.

"That dog don't even know why he's barking and howling at the moon. The moon don't care. The moon is so far away. The dog can't touch the moon. The dog can't shut the moon off. He just sits there. Eventually, the dog will get tired of barking, and he, too, has to admire the moon as it shines. Just let the moon shine, dog," he said.

Lo was quick to respond, saying "He ain't no moon. I feel like he ain't no Jay-Z or nobody like that. He's the clouds, but I ride through clouds every day. He gotta meet me eye to eye. I can't beat him at arguing. He's like a girl. A girl will win an argument every time," he replied, according to MTV.

As Shawty Lo tells it, the beef began when T.I. rejected an offer to appear on a track. The two rappers are both from the Bankhead neighborhood of Atlanta, GA.

"He did put Bankhead on the map. I can't take that away from him. But he ain't from Bankhead," Lo said. "He ain't no real street n---a. We been letting him get away with it for a long time. Tell him to come to Bankhead like he went to [Houston neighborhood] Cloverland with [Lil] Flip," he added.

Shawty Lo says he's got no plans to battle T.I. on his records.

"I ain't gotta respond. I ain't trying to get in no battle rap with T. Lie. That's what he do; he's a rapper. I'm a street n---a. I'm a trapper. I really lived it. I got 28 arrests, four convictions. My name is Carlo Walker — look it up."
T.I. recently appeared on BET in a special interview program titled "T.I. Speaks." Click here to watch the rapper talk about taking responsibility for his recent troubles, and about the paranoia of fame.

SUGE KNIGHT STORY UPDATE. WHOA!

According to TMZ.com, who obtained pictures of the incident, Marion "Suge" Knight, controversial founder of Death Row Records was assaulted last night in Shag Nightclub in Los Angeles last night.

Knight was seen by witnesses arguing with a man, reportedly screaming "I want my money!" According to the reports, Suge and his entourage began assaulting the man, when Suge was struck in the face by the other party, and knocked out.

The pictures on the website [click here to see], show Knight, covered in blood, being escorted from the club, en route to the hospital. Just as the case with the night of Tupac Shakur's murder and the shooting several years at Kanye West's MTV Awards party shooting, Knight did not cooperate with police.

UPDATE: An anonymous witness contacted HipHopDX, claiming to have been in Club Shag Saturday evening. According to the report, Suge Knight was not assaulted by the initial man he was arguing with.

Although the witness confirmed that Knight screamed "I want my money," before allegedly attacking a man with his entourage inside the club, the publicized incident was independent. According to the reports, a third party was video-taping the beating with a cell phone. Knight witnessed this, and attacked the video-taper. The Death Row Records founder put the man in a headlock and took his phone inside the club.

Following the incident, the victim reportedly left the club, went to a vehicle, and opened the trunk. The man removed an unidentifiable object, and as Suge Knight stood outside the club, struck him in the back of the head. The attack left "a large gash" on the back of Knight's head, prompting the blood seen in the pictures provided by TMZ. The hit to the back of the head left Suge Knight unconscious on the sidewalk for a period of about 10 minutes. The attacker reportedly fled the scene.

While on the sidewalk, a female in Knight's entourage reportedly vacated the scene to get a car. Upon pulling in front of the club, the woman wrecked into several vehicles. This incident added to frenzy, that eventually led Knight to a Los Angeles hospital.

When asked by members of press about the incident, Knight has opted not to file a police report, stating that he would deal with the incident internally.

HipHopDX will remain updating on this incident.

EXCERPTS FROM THE 'HIDING IN HIP HOP' BOOK. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

WHO IS THE GAY RAPPER/ACTOR HERE?

I am certainly not into decoding code. Read these excerpts from Terrence Deans’ book, Hiding In Hip-Hop. Who is his talking about? There are three key people.

1) Lucas, a megastar actor

2) Eli, a popular multiplatinum rapper and actor

3) Corey, a singer-songwriter has been on MTV’s “The Cut,” been an opener for Jay-Z. He signed to Eli’s start-up label in the 90’s.

At a party. "There were two male celebrity actors standing a few feet in front of us. They didn't notice us because the club was dark. Both men are young and very attractive and have starred in some comedic and dramatic films. One of the actors, ‘Junior,’ is a tall, muscular, brown-skinned brother who got his start in television and is known for his comedic roles in films. He never married, but has a couple of children with a girlfriend. The other dark-skinned actor, "Fritz," has been in a few movies and has starred in a popular television drama."

Sound like somebody you know? "The lead was ‘Lucas,’ who is a megastar. No matter what film project he was attached to it was bound to be a box office smash. In Hollywood, he is considered a golden boy and very bankable. However, there were already many rumors swirling about his sexuality, and even though he married, it was hard for him to shake those pesky gay rumors."

The greatest? "Eli was a force to be reckoned with. He flew out the gate with his debut album and would become a mainstay in the ever-changing Hip Hop industry, where many rappers are one-hit wonders. He has been hailed as one of the greatest rappers to bless the mic."

Corey and Eli were having sexual relations – on the DL. "Up until that moment I had never heard anything remotely close about the rapper being gay. Eli was a burgeoning superstar who parlayed his marketability into television and movie credits. He even had a promising clothing line. But every man's got needs and Eli's needed tending to."

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMM.....

on that note, I'm going to fix my life. I didn't get the 2-bedroom artist apartment... dang. Thanks anyways, Karen!

***ALERT***
SUGE KNIGHT GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW, KARMA IS SLOWLY RETURNING TO KISS HIM... HARD.

Hip-hop mogul MARION 'SUGE' KNIGHT caused havoc at a Hollywood nightclub on Saturday night (10May08) when he became embroiled in a fight with another partygoer - and got knocked unconscious. The Death Row Records founder was enjoying a night out at Shag when he and his entourage got involved in a verbal altercation with an unnamed man, reportedly in an argument about money. The fight soon turned physical, and Knight's party is said to have assaulted the man.

But the alleged victim hit back and managed to slam a right hook into Knight, knocking him to the ground and leaving him bleeding and out cold for almost three minutes, reports TMZ.com. Knight's entourage helped him to his feet and an unidentified woman then hailed an SUV (sports utility vehicle) to take the heavyset businessman to the hospital. But her attempts to move out of the parking space were also plagued with drama - she backed into both of the cars in front and behind the vehicle, before being removed from the driver's seat by club security. Knight was eventually taken to a local Los Angeles hospital, where he received treatment for minor injuries. However, Knight is refusing to file a police report or help the L.A. Police Department with its inquiries.

URBAN LIFE

New FLOW morphing into the mainstream

May 09, 2008 04:30 AM
Cheryl Thompson
Special to the Star

I'm old enough to remember what life was like before FLOW 93.5.

Back in the '80s and '90s, if you wanted to hear hip-hop and R&B, Buffalo's WBLK-FM 93.7 was the only option. I know people who would drive across the border on a weekend to hear music they were deprived of, living in Toronto.

Last summer, FLOW suddenly became "new" and has slowly begun to incorporate more mainstream hits and less hardcore soul/hip-hop into its play list.

CFXJ-FM a.k.a. FLOW officially debuted as Canada's first urban radio station on March 1, 2001. A short time later, Calgary's CIBK-FM Vibe 98.5 and Vancouver's CFBT-FM The Beat 94.5 also hit the airwaves with a promise to follow a similar urban format. Seven years later, both Vibe and The Beat have morphed into mainstream Top 40 stations, leaving FLOW as the last urban station standing.

When FLOW arrived, it was a breath of fresh air. But, unlike Buffalo's station, it's showing early signs that it could follow the Top 40 path. Why is urban radio such a hard sell in Canada?

Part of the problem could be the CRTC's rule that commercial radio stations must devote at least 35 per cent of their airplay to Canadian artists. But if Glenn Lewis, Melanie Durrant and Remy Shand, for example, had to leave Canada to get a record deal, it's obvious that the industry doesn't give the urban genre the support it needs to get that kind of radio play.

In the U.S., urban radio comprises a network of radio stations set up, from the hosts to the commentary to the programming, to service an urban (read black) milieu by playing a complete mix of hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul, reggae and soca.

While I can appreciate the fact that in Canada we don't have the same demographics or infrastructure to support a network of urban radio stations, we have enough talent in this country to adhere to the CRTC's requirements.

Could it be that we just don't know what "urban music" is?

The Canadian Encyclopedia describes it as "a catch-all phrase for hip-hop and contemporary R&B."

People often mistakenly equate urban with black. Sure, the creators of the music are black but you don't have to be black to be an urban artist. Whether it's called urban music, hip-hop or R&B, its rich history is linked to a wider community.

During the '20s and '30s, jazz, blues and gospel performed by black artists were known as race records. As the documentary Jazz: A Film by Ken Burns suggests, music during this era was marketed directly to urban black America, largely because white audiences just weren't ready for Bessie Smith, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey and Billie Holliday. That all changed in the swinging '40s and '50s, when race music became rhythm and blues.

Artists such as Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and of course the Motown musicians ushered in a new sound. While the music was performed by black artists, it was equally saleable to everyone.

During the '60s and '70s, rhythm and blues merged with gospel and soul music was born. James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye came out of this period.

At some point during the '80s, rhythm and blues became R&B. And hip-hop, born in the streets of New York, became the most dominant form of black music.

I don't believe Calgary and Vancouver lost their urban stations because of a lack of interest in the genre. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone under the age of 40, who doesn't listen to at least one genre under the urban music banner. The problem is much more complex than that.

In Songs in the Key of Black Life: A Rhythm and Blues Nation, Mark Anthony Neal argues that one of the difficulties black artists face in the U.S. is that they are stuck in a racial box in order to sell them and their ideas to a mainstream audience, both black and non-black. In many ways, this parallels the difficulties urban artists face in Canada.

The urban genre is so narrowly defined in this country that unless you rock it like Beyoncé or flow like Kanye West, you face a constant uphill battle to get a record deal, and in turn, commercial radio play.

Black music, hip-hop in particular, appeals to everyone. As African-American scholar Bakari Kitwana says in Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop, the genre has provided a platform around the world for people who have historically been muted.

And so FLOW, as the last bastion of hope for a domestic urban radio station, is in a difficult position – it has to "represent" the nation. That said, it still has a chance to prove wrong the prevailing view that an urban format is destined to fail.

We fought the good fight to get urban radio in this country, and before we lose the last one standing, more effort needs to be made to truly reflect urban artists in Canada, not just the charts.

Something is terribly wrong when artists such as Classified, Shad, Eternia, Malicious, Moka Only, and Zaki Ibrahim perform for thousands across the country and abroad, but on the very outlet that was created for their music they are rarely heard.

Canada has singers with soul and rappers who can spit just as many dope rhymes with beats as hype as any other Top 40 act. We just need a station that is unwavering in its desire to ensure urban artists have the support they deserve.

Time will tell what happens to FLOW, but one can only hope someone takes a stand before urban radio goes the way of the dodo.

Jay-Z says 40/40 Club is fine

Music giant Jay-Z is taking the offensive in an attempt to dispel rumors that his 4-month-old 40/40 Club in Las Vegas is in trouble.

The best-selling rapper, in an e-mail response, said his relationship with multibillionaire landlord Sheldon Adelson is "positive."

Jay-Z's latest 40/40 Club has been beset by rumors and speculation since it opened New Year's Eve in Adelson's new Palazzo.

"Our landlords are great, and we respect their input," Jay-Z said in the e-mail.

ries are being fueled by competitors and disgruntled employees.

"We are high profile and targets for rumors and false accusations," Berkowitz said.

One of the more recent rumors had Adelson reportedly upset after visiting the club.

"No, not true at all," said Jay-Z. "He actually appeared very pleased, and a week after that visit, he held his grand-opening party at the club. He has only been there twice (and I) would love to have him back. I'd move walls if he so desired."

He added, "We have met our financial projections well above our expectations. Business is great. We have conquered all the operational goals and are pleased with the results."

Adelson, the third-richest man in the United States, has been embroiled in a dispute with the owners of Tao nightclub and restaurant over what was to be a sister nightclub in Palazzo.

I DON'T KNOW WHO BLACK ICE IS, BUT HE'S GOT A GOOD POINT HERE:

Black Ice wrote: News Flash! Lil Wayne Is Not On Syrup!

Well, got dammit…I done fucked around and succumbed to doing something I vowed I’d never do on this blog…

Write about Lil Wayne.

Not that I hate dude. Not that I don’t think he can rap. Not that I’m aloof to the fact that he is probably the most dick-rode popular rapper in the game right now. None of that.

Quite simply, I don’t have much to say about the dude. I thought it would be a waste of time to talk about Wayne. Mostly because I was giving folks the benefit of the doubt in thinking that some people might be tired of hearing of and about dude. But judging from what goes down around these parts and many other places and sites, people love to see the dude. They love to praise him, they love to hate him, they love to talk about him, they love to read about him. The world wants as much Weezy as they can possibly stomach. So here it is, my attempt to get a rise out readers and pad my comments speak on someone that I thought everything had already been said about.

NEWS FLASH FUCKERS! LIL WAYNE IS NOT ON SYRUP!

Lil Wayne and his “syrup addiction” has to be the lamest topic in Hip Hop right now, if ever.

Yesterday when I was going to a jazz festival downtown, I ran into an associate. The conversation started with the usual “whats up dude, whats going on” talk. That’s usually the basis of conversations that people in the media have. Shit like “what you got coming, what you working on.” After a couple minutes of that, dude asked me what I thought about Lil Wayne’s “syrup addiction.”

Had this been a nigga I didn’t know, I would have just said “I don’t give a fuck about that shit.” But since I knew and respected dude’s mind and knew for a fact that he was capable of holding a conversation about something more relevant and important I went on ahead and entertained the query.

I told him exactly what I’m about to share with you. This nigga is not addicted to no fucking syrup.

No, I’m not a doctor. No, I don’t hang with the fella. But got damn though…

If this nigga is addicted to syrup like he says he is. Why isn’t he gaining any weight? I mean, not at least a little bit?

Every other time I see this nigga he has his shirt off. You don’t see Paul Wall, Mike Jones or any other Texas rapper or mah fugga praising the effects of syrup running around on stage showing off their bodies. You didn’t see Big Moe (R.I.P.) performing shirtless. You know why? Because they have the “barre belly.” Excessive syrup sippers wind up having digestive problems because of hardened intestines. In other words, they can’t shit. I said that before. You know what happens when shit don’t leave your body? It stays in your body, mainly the stomach. Wayne doesn’t appear to have anything resembling a gut. Unless he’s mastered some ancient forbidden art of being able to suck it in while breathing, talking and rapping.

Another thing I noticed was dudes energy level. Have any of ya’ll seen this dude perform live? I have. And I’ll tell you this, he has one of the more entertaining live sets I can remember. Why? Because this little muthafucka bounces around from one end of the stage to the other for damn near an hour.

Last time I checked, syrup was a downer. It makes you drowsy. Makes you slow down. Makes you nod. Weezy does none of those things during his shows. Hell, he hardly does any of those things during his interviews when he ever so eloquently breaks down just how painful his addiction is. Well maybe sometimes.

I believe Wayne is selling this whole “addicted to syrup” thing because he’s bored. The same way rap and rap fans are bored to the point that “Weezy’s demons” are the hot topic. He brings cups to interviews and answers these dumb ass questions journalists keep asking him about the shit because he’s bored. I really can’t fault dude there.

Syrup talk ain’t the only indicator that dude is bored out of his fucking mind either. Just peep the look on his face. No, not the expression. But his face literally. Dude has tats all over his mug. If that’s not the sign of bored mutha fucka then I don’t know what is. I mean, when I was bored as a child in school, I used to doodle in my notebook and draw on my desk. Them glue sniffing niggas who sat in the back of the class used to write on their hands and give themselves those eraser burn tattoos. As a grown man, when I’m bored I fuck around on the internet and play with some shit in photoshop. Other muthafuckas get stupid ass haircuts/hairdos and write on their face, or in his case and others, get their face written on. (oh yeah, Game is another example of a bored rapper. Suicide nigga? Really? I’m hearing he said that to keep himself awake during the interview.)

Weezy ain’t addicted to syrup ya’ll. But he will act like it as long as it intrigues folks dumb enough to believe it or care. What drug is he on, who ‘nose’? Probably too many to name. But don’t believe the hype.

10 REASONS TO GROW IN LIFE:

10 Ways to Handle Change

Life's transitions are ultimately positive, even if they don't always feel it. Here's how to navigate them gracefully.

By Ariane de Bonvoisin

Everyone experiences change--it may be a job change, relationship change, health change, or a change you've initiated that suddenly seems daunting. If you find change difficult, you're not alone. Many people think change is hard. But it's possible for the change you're going through to be easier, smoother, and less stressful--you can find the positive in transitions and learn to love your life more...you can become a Change Optimist.

Remember That Change Happens to Us All

Change happens every day, to everyone; it's the one constant in life, the thing that connects us all. And whether life has thrown a change at you or you've sought one out, it's natural to find it difficult.

But I believe change is positive, that anyone can change (you're never too old or too young), and there are always ways to make change easier. It's time to learn one of life's most important skills: how to navigate change!

Your Beliefs About Change Are Your Foundation

What you think about change will have a direct effect on how easy or hard you find the process. If you believe that change is difficult and terrible, then you will probably have a difficult and terrible time. But if you believe that change exists to teach you something--to make you a better person and put you on a new path--the transition will not be so daunting. Identify your beliefs--what you think and say to yourself and others during change--and turn them around.

For example, if you are having financial trouble, you may think "I am incapable of managing money." Or if you're going through a difficult break-up, you may believe "I am unlovable." But you can trade these disempowering beliefs--and their accompanying negativity and complaining--for thoughts that will give you strength and hope.

Get 'Unstuck' with the Change GPS

Because of emotions brought up by change, it's easy to get stuck in the past and to lose your ability to move forward. You may feel trapped by these Change Demons, but you can get unstuck by turning on your Change GPS! A GPS navigator only asks two questions: "Where are you now?" and "Where do you want to go?" Your Change GPS helps you move through transitions by alerting you if you're off-course and encouraging you to focus on your final destination.

If you're hoping to lose weight, for example, be honest about where you stand today (how much you need to lose and the most realistic approach), then create a plan and stick to it. The GPS won't tell you what you did wrong yesterday or what you could have done differently; it simply keeps you moving along the path to your ultimate goal.

Turn to Your Change Support Team

It's normal to feel isolated during change. We often think what we are facing is so unique that no one else can help or understand us. But change is easier when you let other people in. Whatever the situation, there is always, always, someone who can help.

One of the quickest ways to embrace change and move through it is to surround yourself with a team of supportive people. They can be family, friends, clergy members, therapists, co-workers--or anyone else who might help you through a change. These people are there to listen, support, and encourage you. They believe you can change, they want you to change, and most importantly, they will keep you on a path of hope and optimism as you move through the transition.

Change Demons Are a Healthy Part of Change

Change Demons are disempowering feelings that arise during any change. These emotions--fear, doubt, impatience, shame, blame, and guilt--can wreak havoc with your self-esteem and destroy hope. But they also remind you how you don't want to feel during change so you can return to how you do want to feel.

When Change Demons visit, remember: 1) they are temporary; 2) they encourage you to make a choice--you can choose to feel better or worse than the emotion you are currently experiencing; and 3) they can be replaced with better, brighter emotions that will help you move through change with ease and grace. Faith, patience, endurance, and honesty are some positive emotions that can replace Change Demons.

Use Your Spiritual Strength

When everything is changing, it's important to find the part of yourself that doesn't change--your calm, centered, spiritual side, your higher self. It's the part that's connected to something greater and uses your intuition as a guide. You need to reconnect to it through prayer, meditation, nature, silence, or journaling...anything that helps you go back inside, where your true spirit and power reside.

While your lower self may slip into self-pity and hold grudges, your higher self doesn't allow you to become a victim, to blame someone else when things get difficult, or to get lost in anger. This side helps you shine in strength, compassion, and clarity. During change, make an effort to act from your higher self and ask: "What would the better, wiser, calmer part of me do or say or think right now?"

You Have a Change Muscle

Everyone is born with a will to survive, get better, and be happier--I call this the Change Muscle. It helps you accept the reality of your situation and find your center again. Every time you are faced with a change and move through it, you are activating that muscle. And once you flex it, it's strengthened for life--you can never lose all that you have gained from experience. Next time you're faced with transition, remember that your Change Muscle will give you the strength to get through it.

Accept Change

When change happens, you often look longingly back to what used to be. You don't like where the river of life seems to be taking you, so you cling to the rocks or row vigorously upstream--that's what makes change tough! Accept change by taking in your new circumstances without fighting, arguing, explaining, or asking "What if?" It may be difficult at first, but you will soon see that life will lead you through this change and into a place of greater happiness and peace.

Go in the direction that life is taking you. If it's a divorce, accept it; if it's a health diagnosis, accept it--only then can you focus on re-aligning yourself with a plan and an optimistic view that focuses on the future, not the past.

Take Action

People who are good at change stop talking and take positive action. Whether life has thrown you a change or you want to make a shift, get a journal and start writing down your feelings. Then make a plan that feels right and is realistic and hopeful. Next, start moving physically. Getting some form of exercise is an absolute must when going through change--don't forget the S.E.E.D of all change. (Sleep, Eat Well, Exercise, and Drink Water).

Doing something for someone else--helping a neighbor, calling a lonely friend, spending extra time with your child--will also help to keep you moving forward during change. You can also try something brand new--a new route home, a new class at the gym, a new restaurant, to get things flowing. During transitions it's also helpful to create a "wall of change" with images of what you want to shift and work towards.

COMMON IS A TERMINATOR KILLER? ILL!!!

Chicago rapper Common has landed a high-profile role in an upcoming new installment of The Terminator franchise of movies.

Common, born Lonnie Rashid Lynn, will star in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, which is being produced by Halcyon Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. and Sony.

The fourth installment of The Terminator focuses on John Connor, who leads the human race in an epic battle against the machines.

Common will star in the movie as a freedom fighter alongside the central character, John Connor, who is being played by actor Christian Bale.

Others starring in the movie include Sam Worthington, Derek Anderson, Jeanne Allgood, Dan Lin, Mortiz Borman, Victor Kubicek, Jeff Silver and others.

The original Terminator movie was released in 1984 and starred current California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The movie’s sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day was released in 1991 and earned four Oscar Awards.

In 2003, Schwarzenegger reprised his role for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which has grossed almost $450,000,000 dollars worldwide, since its original release.

With his latest album Invincible Summer due in stores this summer, the rapper made it clear that he isn’t the typical rapper who turns to acting in order to boost his career, although he has his eyes set on a prestigious prize.

“I'm not a hip-hop dude who wants to act. I'm an artist," Common recently told the Chicago-Sun Times, adding that he has his eyes set on an Oscar Award.

"The Oscar seems very prestigious,” Common said. “With all due respect to the Grammys, there are more music categories and it's easier to get a ticket to the show. Also if you look at it as someone coming from Chicago, there are only so many black artists who receive Oscars."

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins is slated to hit theaters in May of 2009.

50 CENT CHAIN-SNATCHER CAUGHT:

Police in Angola arrested the man accused of jumping on stage and snatching the chain off of superstar rapper 50 Cent during a concert at Cidadela Pavilion in Luanda. Police Superintendent Carlos Mota revealed that officials had apprehended Bruno Carvalho, who hopped on the stage as 50 Cent and G-Unit performed and stanched the rapper’s diamond chain. Carvalho was turned over to authorities by his own parents yesterday (May 4), after footage of the incident hit the Internet and spread throughout the world. Carvalho will face criminal charges for his role in the chain snatching incident, which took place during the annual International Peace Festival.

PEACE TO MTV.COM
ROCK, ROCK, ROCK ON!

Artist: Rock

Representing: The BCC (Boot Camp Clik)

Mixtape: Shell Shock

411: "For my mama to hear [that I was] in a beef with a pimp?" Boot Camp Clik's Rock said to us recently in an NYC studio. "Blew her f---ing mind. 'What? That sh-- is crazy.' "

Before we can even speak on the music this week, we have to talk about Rock's recent troubles with the law. He's accused of attempted murder for allegedly shooting and paralyzing a person his lawyers and police have described as a pimp and a member of the Bloods. Rock's attorney said the MC and the man in question had a fight over a prostitute.

"For people who know me, the whole sh-- is bananas because they know me," added Rock (real name: Jamal Bush), who says he's innocent. "I get paid to talk greasy, not act greasy. This is craziness. Some sideline-hater sh--. I can't understand it. My assumptions would be saying too much."

Rock has been advised not to speak on the specifics of the case. His new mixtape is called Shell Shocked, but he insists it has nada to do with the battlefields of the street and everything to do with the return to his team, the Boot Camp Clik.

Let's do the abbreviated version for those of you not up on the game. Rock left the BCC to work with DJ Lethal several years ago. He came back to the fold and released two solo mixtapes that went under the radar, A.W.O.L. Soldier and Veterans Day.

"It's a continuation of my first two mixtapes," the Rockness Monsta explained. "It's all a military theme being that I'm [in] Boot Camp. I named the third one Shell Shocked — it's a military flashback. I moved out [of the Boot Camp]. I was doing my own thing, but my mind kept pulling me back. [The CD] is explosive, I promise you." Rock and his partner, Ruck, a.k.a. Sean Price, are working on the new Heltah Skeltah LP D.I.R.T. (Dee Incredible Rap Team). That album will precede the release of Roc's next solo LP, Monsta Music.

P.S. MY INTERVIEW WITH ROCK WILL BE OUT IN THE NEW ISSUE OF POUND. PEEP IT!

MORE:

"She wants those heroin tracks," Jay-Z raps on "I Know" — and Pharrell Williams provided Jay with just that addictive of a beat.

"To me, that song sounded like heroin," Jay told us of the record. "That's what it sounded like to me. It sounded like somebody like Miles Davis was in a jazz club just high out his mind, just going off playing some of the most amazing freestyle music you ever heard. That's what it felt like. That's what happens with drugs. They don't pound you like that; they talk to you sweet. And that's the allure of it, and it pulls you in, and that's what was happening. The lyrics were harmless. It's like a love song, and so it was pulling you in. Pulling you in further and further until you've realized, now you're addicted to this drug. So that was the method behind why it sounds so sweet."

For the video, Hov pulled an "I Am Legend" but in reverse. While the producer of Will Smith's recent mega-hit film relied on him to carry the movie on his back, mostly without any human interaction, Jigga's latest video is propelled by the fact that Jay isn't in the clip at all. Hov recruited director Philip Andelman to carry out his vision. According to the lensman, the rap giant was a fan of his work on Lenny Kravitz's "Where Are We Running." And since Hov wouldn't be appearing in the clip himself, Andelman and company cast Kravitz's daughter, Zoe, to be the lead — but not after wracking his brain figuring out who would want to see a Jay-Z video without Jay-Z.

"At first, I thought it was going to be really challenging, because it was just daunting — the thought of holding your attention for three and a half minutes without Jay, because he's a huge presence normally," Andelman told us. "[But] from the get-go, Jay said it would be a distraction if he was in it. And I think he was really right. It winded up allowing us to tell a story."

The video is a series of scenes featuring Kravitz. Among them is a courtship with a young man; her walking aimlessly in lower Manhattan; and a club scene toward the end of the clip. For the most part, the images are dark, save for a few imposed special effects to light up the screen.

"I was just going off the beat of the song. It kind of sparkled. There's something light and airy about it," Andelman said. "But then there's this dark side of the song.

"It's like a Rubik's Cube on ecstasy," the director added. "I know it's bad to push the drug metaphor, but it's kind of funny. Zoe Kravitz is the girl in it, but we wanted to make it ambiguous as to whether it's one girl or four girls. No one can be 100 percent sure of what's going on [in the video]. They all have their own interpretations. And that's what makes it fun to me. It's like a riddle, and there's no right answer or wrong answers. It's like a three-and-a-half-minute head trip." ...

Busta Rhymes' The Big Bang was acclaimed as a sure-shot artistic favorite by fans and critics, so why did it underperform at stores after so much hype? Busta admits that the follow-through after "Touch It" was lacking. He said after all the hype about him joining forces with Dr. Dre, he figured the fans wanted to hear a record by the two of them as a single.

"I think that The Big Bang was my best album, overall," Busta started. "Out of all of my albums, that was my best body of work in one project, to me, from top to bottom. I don't really feel like there's anything that I wanted to do to regroup or change the situation. I just think that that album came out in a time where the transition was happening, in terms of just how the game is fluctuating right now. And I also feel like the single after 'Touch It,' you know, people waited three years to see that Big Bang album happen, so I think people were really looking forward to seeing a Busta Rhymes-produced-by-Dr.-Dre single. Especially after the 'Touch It' record and how big that was."

The problem, according to Bus, was actually him. Turns out he had a feeling about pushing "I Love My Chick" as the next single. He liked the song, just not as a follow-up to the Swizz Beatz smash that kicked off the album. But when the suits at the label suggested it be the next single, Bus graciously relented. Not this time with Back on My Bullsh--, he says.

"If you feel the slightest reluctance to do something, even if being a team player might mean compromising, don't compromise in the way that you're gonna have to live to regret," Busta said. "And that's creatively. [So] for me, I will never allow that process to happen in that way again. So I don't live with regret, because I learned from it." ...

If there is anyone who has experience with dealing with women, it's Archbishop Don "Magic" Juan. The former pimp-turned-holy counselor/ hip-hop personality has taken a new mission on his shoulders. He wants to get Britney Spears on the right track. In late January, he started the Web site HelpBishopSaveBritney.com, where he asks fans to send prayers to the headline-making pop star. Bishop is also videotaped on his site making a plea for Spears to sit down with him for therapy. He says he only needs 33 minutes to get her mind right.

"Thirty-three is the year Jesus died," he explained in L.A. during one of Snoop Dogg's studio sessions with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik. "Thirty-three years he spent on this world. I figured if Britney gave me 33 minutes of her time, I promise to deal away with the situation. I've been there, done that. That's why I'm spiritual adviser to people like Snoop and other entertainers. I understand God opened up my eyes, and I want to open up the eyes of some of the other individuals that truly need the help. I know what it really is. By her being a young lady, she's just going through the young-lady symptoms of dealing with kids at an early age. Dealing with money at an early age. Dealing with fame at an early age. Dealing with 'yes' people at an early age. That really corrupts some individuals. I'm sure with the prayer with HelpBishopSaveBritney.com, she will be able to make a true comeback. We need you, Britney. More importantly, your kids need you.

"People are concerned, saying, 'Yes, Bishop, what do we need to do?' " Magic Juan added about the feedback he's been getting on his site. "Britney knows she has extra fans. ... It ain't nothing like prayer." ...

Papoose says he really didn't have to fight at all ... with Jive Records, that is. According to the Brooklyn native, he signed a recording contract that specified Jive release his long-delayed debut, The Nacirema Dream, within a certain time frame. Pap says Jive didn't have a concrete launch plan, so he and his executive producer, DJ Kay Slay, decided to step.

"The handcuffs, they definitely coming off as we speak," Pap told us of getting his release. "If you look at other artists, some of them would like to sit on the shelf for years rather than move on."

Pap noted that he already has a slew of offers on the table, and whoever he chooses will have to guarantee him that his album will come out in 2008.

The lyrical dictator just dropped his new mixtape, Build or Destroy, and is starting production on a long-form video for all five songs in his "Law Library" series. In April, Papoose appears in the movie "Righteous Kill." He'll be rapping in a scene that takes place in a club.

KANYE APOLOGY FOR LATEST MADNESS:

Don’t believe the hype! When I started the show the other night we were having a lot of technical issues due 2 the heat. The 2 huge screens on both sides of the stage were glaring bright blue like when your DVD player acts up at home. I asked for them 2 turn the screens off 3 times because it was distracting 2 the show. The fans were not getting what they paid for. I admit, in my frustration, I did use profanity on the 4th time I asked. I stopped the show 2 go over and check it out myself. After the screens were turned off I started the same song from the beginning. The screens were eventually fixed 5 songs in but it was definitely better 2 have them blacked out rather than bright blue. Unfortunately for certain media outlets, you will never be able 2 ‘Michael Jackson’ me. That means 2 make it seem like everything I do is so weird or out of place… they always try 2 make it seem like everything is about my ego! That joke is getting old. At a certain point you have 2 respect that I’m one of the last artist that still cares about the fans having the best time of there lives! Thanks 2 Bossip and Perez for taking it easy on me on the EW spaz… I did go in a little 2 much on that one. I’m sure there are some cool people who work over there and had nothing 2 do with that review. With all that said…. “I’m still the greatest!!!” lol!! Oh and I was in the studio with T.I. last night…. so get ready!!!
